Little Squirrels Newsletter Nov 2015 – Jan 2016

Welcome to our 2nd school newsletter, November to January has been a very busy time for us all in Little Squirrels.

Winter has been our main theme under our nature/biology curriculum. Back in November we focused on how winter impacts on our lives, the shorter days and long cosy nights, the warm clothes and comforting foods.

We did art work on the bare trees with glistening frost and this lead into the subject of animal hibernation.

Again we did many parallel exercises here to back up out theme. (Stories, art work and our daily feeding the community birds at Little Squirrels).

Running alongside this the older children have been progressing through their phonetic sounds and number work along with the numerous parallel exercises that go with this.

The younger children have been working on their Practical Life skills and mastering their Sensorial work. Everything is done in the concrete before the abstract can be attempted.

November also saw the children making the wonderful Christmas puddings in preparation for our Christmas Concert.

December saw the focus shift to preparing for the Nativity play which the children carried off with aplomb in front of their very thrilled parents.

This in turn led to the discussions about Santa Claus and where he resides. Geography entered the realm here and we introduced the children to the North Pole via the sandpaper globe and the coloured globe. The talk then centred around the weather and animal life of the North Pole.

We also did much art and craft work on the Christmas theme during this most busy and magical of months.

In January we introduced the children in earnest to planet Earth via the globes and coloured wooden maps.

We touched on earth’s composition of land air and water. Transportation followed. We are now in the process of making maps of the world as the children learn about our 7 continents and again this theme is accompanied with many parallel exercises.

We also had 2 new Little Squirrels join us. So a huge welcome to Jake and Emily.

We have had a fantastic winter season here in Little Squirrels, here’s hoping spring will be even better!

Best Wishes,

Denise, Jane and Marcela
